Woojem Attack

Hi.
Name's Rory.
This is my first ever post on CGsociety.
My drawing depicts an army of alien creatures called woojems attacking a futuristic city of space explorers. The woojems are assembling robots out of junk using electricity and nano-machines while the soldiers attempt to penetrate their force fields with lasers.
Woojems are creatures that my friends and I made up when we were in grade school when we’d do battlefield drawings with each successive character blowing up the character beforehand. Shout out Joey and Dante!
I've got to say that I've seen a lot of you guys on here with fantastic images that they claim to have done in 3 hours or so. Well my hat’s off to you because this drawing has taken me a week working 2-4 hours each night. The original is at 1600X1200 resolution.
I hope you like it.
PS. If there are any photoshop masters out there who willing to share secrets, I have a question:
How do you make your drawings so detailed without scratchiness in such a short amount of time?
I mostly use a standard brush with stylus pressure set to opacity and scale. I often will create texture by crosshatching and then using the smudge tool. I’d love to hear any suggestions about alternatives to this technique?
Thanks –Rory-

I wanted to do a dragon with some personality, and I found that I like him better when he was a little bit fat. I liked the way it made him seem more lumbering and wobbly.

I made this model in 2 marathon 6 hour sessions from concept to final render. This render is a medium resolution z-brush export with a normal map. I used the default scanline renderer in max with a sky light for shading and several colored omni lights set to effect specular for highlight.

I've been to busy to draw for the last 2 few weeks. Among other things, I went to the GDC and showed some of my work around. Some criticism I received is that I should be bolder in my brush strokes and in my composition, and that i should do more sci-fi. I also wanted to do an original creature, and a scene with some action in it. This is what I came up with.
"It's not the smartest steed in the world, but we can make good time... that is unless we travel over a carrot patch. Then we usually have to take a little break"

Wardman Sicklepatch - Snail rider.

The idea of this piece was to create sort of a fun fantasy picture of a house built on top of a snail. I also wanted to try a different type of sky then I've done. Sort of a "big weather" day where the there's light rays pouring through gaps in the clouds. It was a little cumbersome for me, and there're some flaws. I felt I had a lot of success with some new texture brushes I made for the snail skin.

A killer of mechanical precision. He does not feel remorse or regret, just a calculated logic, as cold and sharp as his blade. You will not get his mercy, but you may be spared by his cold decision.

In this piece you are looking through the eyes of a child at a Samurai who is not sure whether or not to kill you. I tried to show this through the prespective and by trying to give the Samurai a questioning and stern look. His sword is ready, but not drawn.

12+ hours in Photoshop CS1. Samurai Armor is COMPLICATED. I can only imagine how long it took to actually assemble a suit.
"I wonder if SHE put that house there ON PURPOSE. She certainly doesn't seem too upset about it.
She isn't acting like a girl who's parents have been crushed.
She turn on the water works when it happened though. Sheesh. I don't even HAVE a house... I never got a free ride.
"To the end of the world" she keeps saying. I don't even know where that is".
-Trumblejobe, Planes Giant.

The idea for this piece is that a giant has stepped on a girls house, and in return she gets to ride him around for a while.
I figure that it wasn't even her house, nor was there anybody inside it. She said that her parents were crushed to guilt trip the giant into carrying her around, and she's loving it.
The Giant on the other hand is getting a little annoyed. I particularly liked it how the boat ends up looking like a silly hat, as if to symbolize the Giant's humiliation.

The idea is that there is a forest that creates Zombies. The wood doesn't burn so they have to chop down each of the trees one at a time, and they grow back right away (see the multiple stumps on the trees). After dark the Zombies come out, and there is a fog that seeps from the forest which acts as a sedative. In this drawing there is a guy who decided to take a nap after felling one of the trees and unfortunately for him... he slept past sunset.

10 hours Photoshop CS1. This piece just never came together for me. Just when I was really starting to want it to be done, I enjoyed a rare photoshop crash. This was great because that meant I was done. The image you see was actually rescued from the time-lapse video I was recording.

I tried out painting with color from the start and found that I didn't like that technique very much. This drawing was like running in flippers for me. A lot of false steps, cumbersome, and overall a lot of waisted work. There was a lot of detail that went into the bark that was lost both by the final contrast and by the artifacts imposed by the compression.

This is another practice drawing. It took about 12 hours to paint in Photoshop CS1 (8 hours of actual painting). It was a challenging piece because of all of the roots. I also think I chose a poor choice of perspective because the drawing doesn't immediately convey the scale I was going for.
-Tim Blacktone, united construction inc.-

I made this drawing for practice as usual. The most challenging things about it for me was drawing from a perspective that I am not used to, and in trying to achieve the feel of out-door lighting. The ghost woman is intended to look alluring and disarming, but she's got a knife in concealed in her right hand. The necromancer is supposed to be backed into the corner attempting to hide himself among the curtains and draperies of the background. I tried to provide clues that the necromancer is controlling the woman by giving them each a similar necklace, and by drawing lines of light from the necromancer's fingers to the woman's hair. I tried to show that the woman was a ghost be making her somewhat transparent, and by making her somewhat self-illuminated.
When I was a kid in grade school, we'd often be told a story and then asked to draw a picture to go with it. The story of Beowulf and Grendel was one of my favorites because I could draw someone getting their arm ripped off without getting in trouble.

As the story goes there was a creature named Grendel who had killed 30 people in a hall. They brought Beowulf to try to take care or it, and well.... he ripped one of Grendel's arms off .

Oh For a Demon Proof Gate

Hello All. Here is my newest drawing.

"My kingdom for a Demon proof gate" depicts a demon centaur breaking down the gate of a fort. The people were not entirely unprepared however and are quick to prepare to fightt. Unfortunately, a carpenter who was making last minute reinforcements to the gate is getting caught and slain by the beast.

I did as part of my 60 drawings in 90 days project. It took me 10 hours in Photoshop CS1. This drawing again was somewhat labored as I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw when I began. I struggled mightily on the position of the demon's legs, and on the pose and expressions of the human characters. I've been trying to incorporate suggestions I've received from various people on this forum on other drawings ive submitted (thanks . I'm trying to figure out ways to use custom brushes. I've got a few that I like okay. One is sort of a leathery cross hatch brush which I used for the demon skin. The others are a clouds brush, and sort of a grainy dirt brush. I am also beginning to try to add color to my highlights and shadows more effectively.

I made a timelapse video of the drawing process.
It is available at 320X240 resolution here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNsrs_cjZH8
and at 800X600 resolution here:

Thanks for looking.

I appreciate all comments, critiques, and advice.

Spider Robot

A piece done for practice.

It took about 5 hours in Photoshop.

This is a drawing of a nano-gangster, a criminal who's been augmented with nano machines to give him superhuman abilities. He's riding a mechanized spider. The drawing depicts him being looked at by the protagonist who is cut from the same type of cloth.

Instead of agonizing over a 20 hour drawing which had become my habit I decided that the best way for me to improve would be for me to concentrate on doing drawings quickly, figuring that as my speed improved the quality of my work would as well. I intend to do a drawing a day for the next 3 months. This drawing isn't that hot, but stay tuned... They'll get better.

I'm still learning and I'd appreciate any type of advice that you masters out there are willing to send my day.

Thanks for looking. comments welcome.

I've also done my first time-lapse painting video:
